The UCSF Fresno Alzheimer’s & Memory Center (AMC) is a multi-disciplinary diagnostic clinic specializing in the diagnosis and management of neurodegenerative disorders, the most common of which is Alzheimer’s disease.
The AMC is part of the State’s collaborative network of Alzheimer’s disease Centers. There are 10 “Centers of Excellence” in the network, all operated through one of the medical schools in the State and supported in part by a grant from the State of California, Department of Public Health. The California Alzheimer’s Disease Program has been in operation since 1985 and the AMC first opened in Fresno in 1989. The AMC serves the Central Valley from Modesto to Bakersfield, and includes San Luis Obispo County in its service area (10 counties).
The AMC employs a multidisciplinary team of clinicians to conduct clinical evaluations, patient care conferences, community education, and academic and professional training. The Center also participates in both clinical and bench research on Alzheimer’s and related dementias, changes in neural circuitry, neuropsychological changes, caregiver issues and other aspects of neurodegenerative diseases. Autopsies provide the most definitive diagnosis possible for the family and help us immeasurably in our research efforts. Brain autopsy is often sought and provided for patients who have been evaluated at the AMC, especially those with unusual presentations of these disorders.
